Crawford County, AR Special Edition
Collector’s Grade Ruger Superblackhawk in a .44 mag. caliber
Crawford County was the largest county in Arkansas when it was established in 1820. Originally, Crawford County included parts of eight counties as well as part of the Indian Territory. Crawford County features rugged terrain from the Ozark Mountains in the northern half to rolling farmlands, forested ridges, isolated mountains, and lakes in the southern half.
Crawford county is also famous as the home of Deputy U.S. Marshal Bass Reeves, one of the most respected lawmen working in Indian Territory. The Crawford County Courthouse is listed in the National Historic Register and is thought to be the oldest active county courthouse west of the Mississippi River. The original portion of the courthouse was constructed in 1842 and has the original Seth Thomas tower clock.
Van Buren, Crawford’s county seat was the site of the Civil War Battle of Van Buren, AR fought December 28th 1862 along the Arkansas River in and around the town. Downtown Van Buren is also famous for the Old Frisco Depot. The St. Louis and San Francisco Railway Co. (StL&SF), better known as the Frisco, was organized in 1876 in Missouri. By 1881, the company had acquired or built lines crisscrossing central and southern Missouri and had begun extending into the northern corners of Arkansas. Although the Frisco never built into the heart of Arkansas, its feeder lines across northwestern and northeastern Arkansas connected communities with other lines across the state.
